Exercise of the Day: Dumbbell Deadlifts

Hi folks,

You may’ve noticed some of the workouts we’ve been posting on our Facebook wall, if not, please check them out here: GymProfessor.com Fan Page
As the page is public, it doesn’t matter whether you’re on Facebook or not, everyone can see it.

Natural Bodybuilder Matt Bembridge (from exercise demonstrations) has also joined Facebook in order to share his workouts and diet in the lead up to competing in July. To follow, please send him a friend request by visiting http://www.facebook.com/Matt.Bembridge
Matt will be using GP Shuffle to perform his gym workouts, although I don’t think he’ll warrant the need to look at the Step-by-Step demonstrations ;). To download GP Shuffle (it’s free!) to your iPhone or iPad, please click Free Gym Workout App

Amongst others, we’ll be adding some of these workouts to our free online resource www.gymprofessor.com under the Gym Workouts section.

Remember, we now have over 300 exercise demonstrations cataloged also, so, to spice up those workouts, be sure to see: Exercise Demonstrations
Here's my Exercise of the Day: Dumbbell Deadlifts

All the best,

Workouts and more...

Hi guys & gals,

Sorry that I’ve been a little less frequent with my mails, we’ve been very busy working behind the scenes and on future project ideas ;) .

First up, those of you that follow our social sites (Facebook and Twitter) will note that our online Exercise Demonstration catalog is nearing completion. So, if you’re unsure how to perform an exercise, or just want some ideas to spice up your gym workouts, be sure to visit our exercise database here:
We’ll update you again when the database is complete.

Facebook and Twitter fans may’ve also seen friends socialize their GP Shuffle workouts. Posting workouts from the GP Shuffle app works adequately at present, but we hope to improve on how it integrates with Facebook and Twitter apps on a future update. We’ll be sharing some of our own GP Shuffle workouts on our Facebook fan page too. To keep up-to-date, please visit:
Other insightful information will include dietary habits and supplements used by some of those featured.
Even if you’re not a member of Facebook, you can still view the majority of information that we’ll be posting at the link provided, as it’s a public page :). We will also include some of the highlights within our newsletters.

Another project I’m quite excited about, later this year, we hope to bring you a new insightful gym workout book, including new workouts, exercise demonstrations, training articles etc. I won’t give away too much detail thus far, however, we hope on releasing an eBook version of the book for FREE and also a paperback, with royalties of the paperback being donated to a worthwhile cause.

There’s more projects in the pipeline too, but we can only do one thing at a time :) .

Remember, all of these projects are possible thanks to your support. Please help us to continue to grow by sharing our resources with your friends and family.

All the best,

GP

P.S. On a side-note, I have set-up a blog on behalf of my Dad. A keen historian (specialist subject WWI), my Dad will be posting some of his thoughts and some of the articles he has had published. I find his first post very poignant. Please visit his blog, or sign-up to his newsletter, here: http://armisticeday.blogspot.com

Busy Gym? We have hints & tips for your success!

Hi all,

Has your gym been busy? Yep, mine too. It happens every year, with large corporate gyms over-selling memberships to generate the bulk of their year’s revenue. Even smaller independent “customer first” gyms can struggle to accommodate us all. Well, if you’re one of those new-starters, stick at it. Or, if you know people that have just started, encourage them to stick at it. There’s really no need for the gym stalwarts to be disgruntled that people are in your way, they’re generally not. Treat it as good excuse to mix your training up a bit – a change could be what your body needs! Either circumstance, we’ll be offering some words of experience to help with all your physique and health endeavors. Please be sure to share this information with your fellow trainers.

First off, gym noobs (newbies).
Please, please, please take baby-steps. Realistically, the first 2 to 3 weeks of training should be boring (yep, boring!). If you’re weight training, you should be lifting token weights and ensuring good form throughout all movements. Not lifting the maximum you can for hours and then not being able to move the next day!! If you’re performing cardio, you should be performing it at an extremely low intensity. Not high-paced intervals until you throw up!! Right, telling-off over. After the first couple of weeks of starting to learn the trade at the gym, the fun starts. You now know a bit more about your body and what it’s capable of and can push it that little bit further each time. If you’re training sensibly, there’s no way you cannot make progress. Seeing your ability and physique change near on week-on-week, what’s not to enjoy and want you to go back to the gym for more? Zero. Zip. Zilch. Nothing.

Gym Stalwarts.
Generally, I love you guys. I am one of you. But (& it’s a BIG but), please change your training methods every once in a while. If you do the same thing you have always done, you’ll always get the same results (at best). Maintenance/ active rest are fine on occasion, but you can train wiser (not necessarily harder) and make good progress. As mentioned at the opening of this newsletter, treat the influx of new gym members as a good excuse to alter your training habits, if only for a relatively short period of time.

All
For both camps (new to the gym, or never been away), we have free solutions and advice all over our website (www.gymprofessor.com). Please be sure to use them and share them. Workout-wise, we have free cardio workouts and gym workouts at the respective links below. We have workouts for all abilities and endeavors.

Better-still, if you have an iPhone (or iPod Touch or iPad), you can download our free Personal Training app (GP Shuffle). GP Shuffle contains ability-dependent and goal-specific workouts for everyone, accompanied by step-by-step exercise demonstration. It’s of even greater use during busy gym periods. Because, if a piece of gym equipment is busy, simply shuffle to an alternate exercise. You can shuffle workouts too. GP Shuffle is without-doubt the most comprehensive workout tool on the planet. For more details, or to download, visit: Personal Trainer and then some.

I hope this information helps you. If you have found it useful, please support our free resource by sharing and promoting it. You can now find us on Facebook and Twitter too.

Enjoy the game & best regards,

Choosing Dumbbells for your Home Gym Workouts

As myself (GP) and contributing Fellows to the Gym Professor web site work in one form or another in the sporting world, we're rather spoilt when it comes to choosing supplements and gym equipment, as we have free-trial and pick of pretty much everything on the market. Therefore, when it came to selecting home-use dumbbells to feature in our book - Home Gym: Gym Ball & Dumbbell Workouts for Women - the Bowflex SelectTech 552 Dumbbells, with adjustment from 5lb to 52lb per dumbbell, were an easy and unanimous choice.

Dial-up/ selectable adjustable dumbbells, like the Bowflex 552 Dumbbells, have an obvious quick-change advantage over a dumbbell bar (that you load with plates) and take up less space than a fixed set of dumbbells. Price-wise they fall between the two. Unlike the advertising material associated with this type of interchangeable dumbbell, I'm not going to blurt on further about the benefits of choosing an adjustable dumbbell for home gym training, as the advantages are clear, instead, I'll discuss why I personally rate the SelectTech 552 Dumbbells as being the sensible choice.

There's now many brands offering an adjustable dumbbell of this ilk, examples include PowerBlock, TurboBell, Gold's Gym Transformer, York Fitness Dial Tech. All of the aforementioned have a sales tag-line of some kind or another for you to buy their product over their competitors. PowerBlock's marketers often use "original", "ergonomically designed" and "best" amongst their sales pitch, whereas Gold's Gym can promote their product as being cheaper than their rivals. Having used them all, I can categorically say without biased that the Bowflex SelectTech 552 Dumbbells offering is the best - yes, the Bowflex SelectTech 552 Dumbbells gets the Gym Professor 5 star rating! The reason, it's quicker to use/ adjust than the "original" and "best" options and the adjustment is not prone to "stick", as I've experienced on the cheaper copies. The Bowflex SelectTech 552's are also comfortable in the palm and are not too cumbersome in size for use during a gym workout. Also of note, they offer the best incremental range of those available and appear to age better (show less signs of wear), compared to cheaper alternatives.

You may have noticed that Bowflex offer a larger adjustable dumbbell - the SelectTech 1090's (10lb to 90lb adjustment per dumbbell). Although they've existed for a few years now, the 1090 dumbbells were in production for a couple of years prior, most likely the concern over the size a major contributing issue. The Bowflex SelectTech 1090 Dumbbells are a success for the heavier home lifter, benefiting from the build quality and comfort of the smaller 552 dumbbells, however, the 1090 dumbbells are not a dumbbell set for couples. Most women will find the shaft (just shy of 18" long) a bit awkward for some gym exercises, plus the smaller increment settings of the 552 dumbbells are one of the reasons they're favored over other adjustable dumbbells. If you're a heavier home lifter and you can afford it, you'd love having the two pairs (552's and 1090's). If it's an "either/ or" choice you're making, I'd choose the smaller 552's in preference and incorporate more barbell work for your heavier exercises/ lifts, if required.

The Bowflex SelectTech 552 Dumbbells are featured in the book Home Gym: Gym Ball & Dumbbell Workouts for Women
, which features 15 gym workout routines and over 100 color exercise illustrations. So, for comprehensive gym workouts at home, you should consider the purchase of the SelectTech 552 Dumbbells and the aforementioned book. Remember, for gym workouts (in a commercial gym), please refer to the free gym workout routines featured on the Gym Professor database and consider the purchase of our acclaimed Gym Workouts: Maps to Success book.
